Product features

PM LINE
Classic permanent magnet brakes

Torsionally play-free torque transmission & residual torque-free release

About the PM Line

The PM Line includes permanent magnet brakes where the braking effect is generated by a permanent magnetic field. The brake thus acts in the de-energized state and performs the following functions: holding, positioning, and emergency stop. The braking effect is released by an opposing electromagnetic field, ensuring high safety even in case of power failure. Permanent magnet brakes are characterized by safe, residual torque-free release in any installation position and play-free transmission of the braking torque.

Functioning
The permanent magnet single surface brake is a dry-running component that utilizes the force effect of a permanent magnetic field to generate the braking effect. To release the braking effect, the permanent magnetic field is displaced by an electromagnetic counter field (electromagnetically opening system). Through the play-free connection of the armature with the flange hub of the brake, a play-free transmission of the braking torque to the shaft of the machine (e.g., motor) and a secure residual torque-free release of the permanent magnet single surface brake is ensured, making the brake especially suitable for installation in servo motors.

Construction
Between the outer ring and inner ring of the permanent magnet single surface brake is the fixed excitation winding, whose connection leads are routed at the circumference of the brake. The permanent magnets, axially arranged between the outer ring and the flange of the inner ring, generate the magnetic field used to build up the braking effect. The armature is axially movable, torsionally stiff, and friction-free connected to the flange hub via segment springs and fixing rivets. This achieves residual torque freedom in horizontal and vertical operation. The air gap s between the armature and the outer ring of the permanent magnet single surface brake is set during brake assembly (e.g., via installation tolerances). The flange hub is torsionally stiff and axially fixedly connected to the shaft of the machine (e.g., motor). Under the influence of the permanent magnetic field, the armature is force-locked pressed against the outer ring or inner ring, thus producing the braking effect. When a DC voltage is applied to the excitation winding of the permanent magnet single surface brake, the force effect of the permanent magnetic field on the armature is canceled due to the electromagnetic counter field and the brake is released. Apart from the slight axial force of the segment springs, the shaft to be braked experiences no axial force.
